Underground in Almeria City

Refuges first pic.JPG

The Civil War refuges built for the people of Almeria, as Franco's forces attacked a defenceless civil population with the help of the Hitler's German forces, was little known to us and other visitors until today. Join us to discover the truth of Spain's forgotten city in Franco's times and beyond.

A specialist mining architect gave his time (as did every individual in the city who could help to build the shelter in any spare moment), to hide away the terrified Almerian's who had no defences against the bombing from both land and sea - this was a race against time.

Keith and Artemis imagined how it must have felt to have no lighting at all - pitch black as the bombs were dropped and everyone sat on stone benches at each side of the shelter. "I would have felt afraid just because of the dark", admitted Artemis as the stories unfolded of the times in the shelter. It was forbidden to talk of religion or politics in case a fight broke out, which could have resulted in unbridled chaos within the tension of the tunnels.

Out day trip to Almeria City reveals those secrets, including a visit to the war refuges, with a hope that the atrocities will never repeated again along these shores. Then we can celebrate the freedom we can now experience.

A 70th year birthday party for Fergus, who loves the history of the area and following the refuges experience with the Almeria City tour yesterday. He now celebrates his landmark birthday in the unparalleled Casa Puga, with tapas galore (more than 150 years old - not the tapas, Casa Puga!).
